Twitter, now rebranded as X, is a social media and microblogging platform originally launched in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Noah Glass, and Evan Williams. It became popular for its short, real-time posts known as “tweets,” initially limited to 140 characters and later expanded to 280. Twitter quickly evolved into a hub for news, discussions, and instant communication across the globe.
The platform allows users to share text, images, videos, links, and polls while engaging with others through replies, retweets, and likes. Hashtags play a major role, enabling topics and movements to trend worldwide. Twitter has been instrumental in shaping public opinion, breaking news, and driving social and political conversations, often serving as a digital public square.
In October 2022, Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion and began transforming the platform. It was rebranded as “X” in 2023, with ambitions of becoming an “everything app” that integrates payments, shopping, and more. Features like Twitter Blue (now X Premium), Spaces for live audio discussions, and community notes for fact-checking were added.
With hundreds of millions of active users, Twitter/X remains a powerful tool for communication, marketing, activism, and real-time updates in today’s digital era.
